<P>La présente invention est relative à un procédé de préparation d'acrylamide, caractérisé en ce qu'il consiste à traiter de l'acrylonitrile avec de l'eau, en présence d'un catalyseur à base de cuivre qui a été préparé en volatilisant du cuivre métallique, puis en refroidissant les vapeurs de cuivre en présence d'un solvant organique et en réchauffant à température ambiante, dans des conditions d'hydrolyse, et à récupérer l'acrylamide résultant.</P>
A finely divided metallic Cu catalyst obtd. by volatilising Cu, cooling the vapour in contact with an organic solvent and heating to ambient temp. is used for the prodn. of acrylamide from acrylonitrile and water. In an example acrylonitrile is reacted with water at 120 degrees C under nitrogen (up to 70 psi) for 6 hrs. using a catalyst obtd. by vaporising Cu on a liq. N2 temp. controlled wall on which THF is also condensed, heating the prod. to room temp. and removing the THF in vacuo. Conversion to acrylamide = 40%. Acrylamide is a flocculent, paper strengthening agent and additive for tert. oil recovery. Improved yields of acrylamide are obtd. without the attendant worry of disposal of unwanted side prods. or undesirable separation steps. The catalyst is not rapidly poisoned by polyacrylamide formation.
